The definition of what a web browser is and what it should be capable of has change quite a bit over the life of the internet. In the early days of the web there were many different options for what web browser you wanted to use, and while it may still feel that way today most web browsers you can download and suff the internet with today are actually just different variants and flavors of Google Chrome. There is actually a non-google version of Chrome called "Chromium", and while it is maintained and developed by Google, it's free to use and build upon for any aspiring developer, or even for an enormous technology and software company like Microsoft to take and rebrand as the new "Microsoft Edge" browser. The lesser-known but still popular browser Opera also switched their engine to Chromium in order to support all of the Plugins available in the Google WebStore. The only major browser options that have managed to maintain their own engine are Firefox and Safari. Safari is developed by and designed for Apple and their computers, and who really uses Firefox anyway?
